Aquaphor vs Eucerin: Which is Better?

Aquaphor Healing Ointment is an ointment that repairs, protects, and soothes very dry, cracked, or irritated skin. Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream is a body moisturizer that offers 48-hour moisture to help strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier.

Both of these products serve as a great relief for those with dry skin, but what’s the difference between the two, and which is better? We’ll discuss product ingredients and benefits in this post on Aquaphor vs Eucerin.

Aquaphor vs Eucerin: What’s the Difference?

Both Aquaphor and Eucerin are made by the same company, Beiersdorf Inc., a global skincare company based in Germany that manufactures many popular skincare brands, including Nivea and Coppertone, in addition to Aquaphor and Eucerin.

So what is the difference between Aquaphor and Eucerin? Let’s take a look at the formulas.

It’s a healing solution, and dermatologist recommended for dry, cracked skin, like hands, cuticles, feet, and cracked heels.

Aquaphor contains petrolatum (at a 41% concentration), also known as petroleum jelly, as one of the primary ingredients which helps with healing by forming a protective seal over the wound or skin irritation.

The ointment exhibits semi-occlusive properties, which helps retain water in the skin while allowing the skin to heal.

Aquaphor also contains mineral oil, glycerin, panthenol, and bisabolol as other key ingredients:

• Mineral oil is an occlusive oil that forms a layer on the surface of the skin to stop water from evaporating from your skin. It’s also non-irritating and has emollient properties, which makes it a good choice for sensitive skin.
• Panthenol (pro-vitamin B-5) is an anti-inflammatory and moisturizer that helps reduce transepidermal water loss. It also aids in healing, making it an ideal active to soothe minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.
• Glycerin is an effective moisturizing agent that supports a healthy skin barrier. It also has humectant properties, which means it attracts water to your skin.
• Bisabolol is derived from the chamomile plant and is an anti-irritant that helps ease redness and inflamed skin.

Aquaphor has a thick and rich greasy texture. It is preservative and fragrance-free, and suitable for the whole family.

Nourishing ingredients include:

• Glycerin is a humectant that moisturizes the skin.
• Urea is a Natural Moisturizing Factor, which is an ingredient found in the skin (like amino acids or lactate) that helps it stay hydrated, elastic, and retain moisture, making it ideal for skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. Urea helps improve skin barrier function and even has antimicrobial properties.
• Shea butter is antioxidant-rich, has emollient properties, and improves the look and feel of dry, cracked, or irritated skin.
• Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates the top layer of your skin and helps smooth, dry, rough areas.
• Ceramide NP is a lipid found in between cells that keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Ceramides help improve the look and feel of very dry skin. They also help to strengthen your skin’s natural barrier against irritants like harsh soaps or other environmental aggressors.
• Glycine and alanine are amino acids that hydrate and moisturize the skin. Amino acids are building blocks of proteins like collagen and elastin, which keep the skin looking firm and youthful.

Eucerin is fragrance-free, dye-free and paraben-free, and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

This body cream has a lightweight but rich texture that is deeply moisturizing. Eucerin also offers Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion, which contains most of the same ingredients as the cream but isn’t quite as rich.

NOTE: Since this cream contains lactic acid, it is important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when using this product and any other skincare products that contain alpha hydroxy acids.

Aquaphor vs Eucerin: For Lips

Aquaphor’s texture is thicker, richer, and greasier than Eucerin, making it a better product for the lips.

Aquaphor even provides a bit of shine, as it protects dry lips against the elements. (Aquaphor also offers lip products in their Lip Therapy line.)

Eucerin has the texture of a rich moisturizer which is not ideal for lips. Eucerin also offers lip products like their Lip Active lip balm.

Aquaphor vs Eucerin: For Face

Aquaphor can be used as a spot treatment on the face on dry, irritated, and chapped skin.

Even though Aquaphor is supposed to be non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog pores, since the formula is very rich, it may not be ideal for those with combination, oily, or acne-prone skin.

Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream is formulated for the body, so if you want a product specifically for the face, you’d be better off choosing Eucerin Daily Protection Face Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 30, which provides sun protection and won’t clog pores.

Eucerin is a much better all-over body moisturizer that you can use daily. Aquaphor is a little too greasy to use all over your body and is better as a spot treatment on the affected area.

Aquaphor vs Eucerin: For Baby

Aquaphor Healing Ointment soothes dry skin, diaper rash, and minor cuts, scrapes, and burns. Aquaphor also has a baby skincare line that offers multiple products.

Aquaphor Baby Healing Ointment contains the exact same ingredients as Aquaphor Healing Ointment. Aquaphor also sells a Diaper Rash Cream, Diaper Rash Paste, and Baby Wash and Shampoo.

Eucerin also has an entire line dedicated to baby skincare. This product line includes products like Baby Lotion, Baby Cream, and Baby Wash and Shampoo.

Eucerin also offers products specifically designed for baby eczema: Baby Eczema Relief Cream Body Wash, Baby Eczema Relief Body Cream, and Baby Eczema Relief Flare-Up Treatment.

These Eucerin baby products are formulated with ingredients like skin-protecting colloidal oatmeal, Ceramide-3, and licochalcone, a licorice root extract to soothe dry, irritated, eczema-prone skin.

Eucerin also offers a line of eczema products for adults.

Aquaphor vs Eucerin: Wound Care

Aquaphor ointment can be used on minor cuts, burns, and scrapes, thanks to its soothing ingredients.

Aquaphor also offers a skincare product dedicated to wound care: Healing Ointment for Minor Wound Care, which contains the same ingredients as Aquaphor Healing Ointment.

Eucerin doesn’t offer products designed specifically for wound care, so Aquaphor is the better choice between the two.

Aquaphor vs Eucerin: Which is Better?

Both Eucerin and Aquaphor are excellent products to treat dry, irritated skin. The Aquaphor or Eucerin product that works best for your skin condition and skin concerns will be the better choice for you.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment is an ointment with a rich and greasy semi-occlusive texture that is ideal for dry and very dry skin, such as cracked skin on the lips, hands, feet, and heels. It also contains several ingredients to soothe irritated skin.

Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream is a rich cream that isn’t greasy like Aquaphor, making it an ideal all-over body moisturizer for dry to very dry skin.
