Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 Review

Drmtlgy is a medical-grade skincare brand that formulates its products using the latest scientific research. I found a new favorite product with their Needless Serum (see my review here), so I was curious to try more products from the brand to see how they perform.

I recently purchased Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44, a mineral sunscreen formulated with titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

I had high hopes for this Drmtlgy product and will share my experience in this Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 Review.

Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44

Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 is a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen and tinted foundation all-in-one.

It is formulated to provide sun protection and hydrate and nourish the skin, providing a healthy glow to your complexion.

The formula provides UVA, UVB, infrared, and blue light protection in a 100% mineral base. The mineral sunscreen in the formula comes from 10% zinc oxide and 5.5% titanium dioxide.

The tinted sunscreen is only available in one shade called Universal Tint. It is a medium shade, but it is formulated to work with all skin tones.

The moisturizing sunscreen is water-resistant (up to 80 minutes), reef-safe, and contains hydrating and protective actives like hyaluronic acid and vitamin E. Iron oxides offer enhanced protection from blue light.

The oil-free formula won’t clog pores or cause breakouts and blemishes. The sunscreen contains no chemical filters and is essential oil and fragrance-free.

Thanks to the gentle formula, this sunscreen is suitable for sensitive skin types. Made in the USA and cruelty-free.

Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 Key Ingredients

10% Zinc Oxide: Zinc oxide is a physical sunscreen agent that reflects and scatters UVA and UVB rays away from the skin.

It is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects from the sun’s harmful rays, including all UVB rays and short-wave and long-wave UVA rays.

5.5% Titanium Dioxide: Titanium dioxide is a physical broad-spectrum sunscreen agent that effectively reflects and scatters short-wave UVA and UVB rays away from the skin. (It is less effective at blocking long-wave UVA rays.)

Both zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are non-comedogenic, which means that they won’t clog pores, which can lead to breakouts and blemishes.

Sodium Hyaluronate: Sodium hyaluronate is a form of hyaluronic acid that helps keep the skin hydrated. Sodium hyaluronate has a lower molecular weight than hyaluronic acid, so it can penetrate the skin more deeply for maximum hydration.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant. It scavenges free radicals and protects the skin from environmental stress like sun damage and pollution.

Ascorbyl Palmitate: Ascorbyl palmitate is a vitamin C derivative with mixed results as an antioxidant.

Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 Review

Drmtlgy Physical Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 sampled on hand, bottle lying flat on green background.

My skin is sensitive to chemical sunscreens, so I always wear mineral sunscreens.

I have tried countless mineral sunscreens, and it’s challenging to find a physical sunscreen that doesn’t leave a white cast even on my light skin tone or isn’t too drying and works well with makeup.

Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 is tinted, which I was thrilled to see since tinted sunscreens help to offset the dreaded white cast. It comes in a generous and easy-to-use 2.1 oz pump bottle.

It has a thick creamy texture that blends easily into my skin. It pairs well with Drmtlgy Vitamin C E + Ferulic Serum and a lightweight moisturizer like this one for my combination skin.

The shade of the tint is a medium shade that has a warm hue. I have a cool skin tone, so it seems a bit yellow to me compared to my regular foundation shade.

The shade is somewhat sheer, though, and it leaves a pretty filter-like glow on my skin. It works well with my other skin care products and doesn’t cause any pilling.

Since this sunscreen is a little dark for my skin tone and because I like more coverage than this tinted moisturizer provides, I follow with my regular foundation, which lightens the shade.

My foundation has a somewhat matte finish, but I notice my skin has a slight glow with this sunscreen underneath.

Where this sunscreen really excels is its lightweight feel on my skin. Most mineral sunscreens feel like I’m wearing a mask, and I usually can’t wait to wash my face at the end of the day.

This feels super hydrating but lightweight, which is an accomplishment for a mineral sunscreen. Plus, this SPF moisturizer is affordably priced.

Drawbacks

While sodium hyaluronate and vitamin E are excellent for skin, there are other actives that are included in Drmtlgy’s chemical sunscreens, like niacinamide, which would be nice to have in this sunscreen.

That being said, since this sunscreen is formulated for all skin types, including sensitive skin, I understand that limiting the number of actives will reduce the likelihood of a reaction or skin irritation.

Although it is intended to be a universal tint, and the shade is formulated for all skin tones, I think it may be too light for darker skin tones and a bit too dark for pale skin tones.

While formulated for all skin types, this sunscreen will probably be too dewy of a finish for those with oily skin. I think it will work best for those with normal to dry skin, especially if you are looking for a glowy, dewy finish.

How To Use Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44

As the final step in your morning skincare routine, apply this tinted sunscreen to your face and neck, making sure to avoid the delicate eye area.

Drmtlgy notes to wait at least 30 minutes before sun exposure or as directed by a physician. Reapply every 2 hours or as needed.

Alternatives to Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44

If you would like to try Drmtlgy’s best-selling chemical sunscreen, Drmtlgy Universal Tinted Moisturizer SPF 46, it is a thin, oil-free formula that contains zinc oxide 12%, octinoxate 7.5%. It also contains niacinamide, vitamin E, sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid), Polygonum aviculare (knotgrass) extract to hydrate, soothe and protect the skin.

If you want to stick with a tinted mineral sunscreen, consider Elta MD UV Elements Broad-Spectrum SPF 44. It provides a similar broad spectrum SPF as Drmtlgy, with 10% Zinc Oxide and 5.7% Titanium Dioxide.

Like Drmtlgy, Elta MD contains similar active ingredients, such as sodium hyaluronate and ascorbyl palmitate. The texture of Elta MD is thicker than Drmtlgy, though, and it’s water-resistant up to 40 minutes, compared to Drmtly’s 80 minutes.

An affordable drugstore mineral sunscreen that is hydrating like Drmtlgy is Olay Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30. The sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection with 17.5% zinc oxide, which leaves more of a white cast than Drmtlgy since it is not tinted.

The formula also contains Olay’s Amino Peptide to target the visible signs of aging, like wrinkles and fine lines. It’s a great choice if you have a dry skin type.

Final Thoughts on Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 Review

Drmtlgy Physical Tinted Moisturizer SPF 44 could be a good option if you are looking for an affordable, lightweight mineral sunscreen that won’t leave your skin feeling dry.

The formula is hydrating and contains a universal tint that should work well for you if you have a medium skin tone.

I think the tinted sunscreen would work best for those with dehydrated or dry skin looking for a dewy finish. It might leave your skin feeling a little too greasy if you have oily skin.
